A business tax receipt is required for anyone who, for compensation, offers to show and describe the points of interest and historical places in the city. Tour guides must be 18 years of age or older and must pass an examination as to their knowledge of the history of the city; the names and location of streets and highways, proper designations and history of the various points of historical and general interest within the city and its vicinity and other pertinent information. Tour Guide Study Booklets are available at Customer Service, Financial Services Center. Tour guide exams are on Wednesday and Friday between 8:30am and 10:30am. Other testing times are available by appointment only.
The tax receipt cost for a guide is $8.00 and there is a $10.00 fee for administrative processing. The business tax receipt expires September 30 of each year and must be renewed annually.
Additional cost for guides include a $25.00 “driver for hire” fee for individuals driving franchise vehicles and carriages.
The licenses are issued by the Department of Finance, Budget and Management at the Financial Services Center, 50 Bridge St., 904-825-1037.
