Playground Equipment for Fullerwood

After years of hopes and dreams, discussions and meetings, planning and funding, the Fullerwood Park neighborhood will get the playground it wanted for so long.

Located along Hildreth Avenue, preparations are nearly finished on the 19,740 sq. ft. playground which is part of the site of the former Fullerwood Elementary School. The building was closed as a public school in the mid-1980’s, used by St. Johns River Community College for 10 years, and now is the site for several offices of the St. Johns County School District.

Members of the Fullerwood neighborhood have met several times to discuss playground equipment and have offered many suggestions to city staff responsible for the design, purchase and installation of the equipment.

Individuals and community organizations are showing their support with cash contributions towards the equipment. Ms. Gina Burrell, a nearby neighbor and one of the earliest advocates for the park, has contributed funds for a bike rack for the park. Also, the Kiwanis Club of St. Augustine donated over $600 for a basketball hoop and backstop. Others wishing to contribute may do so by contacting Mark Knight, City of St. Augustine, P. O. Drawer 210, St. Augustine, FL 32085.

For many in the area, the Fullerwood Park playground will bring back to the neighborhood something it has not had in over 20 years: the sound of neighborhood children at play in a neighborhood playground.
