The Department of Heritage Tourism has the responsibility for maintaining the 32 properties, many colonial era buildings, owned by the State of Florida throughout the city's downtown historic district. The department is also responsible for the promotion and interpretation of the city's history as told through three museums, and through the Trust for Historic Preservation produces several festivals to generate support for ongoing programs of historic preservation.
