Increased water conservation starts with cost savings and efficiency

Starting the first of August, the City of St. Augustine will continue its ongoing program to replace water meters in use by its utility customers. The work is being done for the city by National Meter Services.

Begun in June 2016 with replacements in Heritage Park subdivision, the program will continue by replacing 2,700 meters in three areas: Lincolnville south of Park Pl. and along Riberia St east to Washington St.; east of Ponce de Leon Blvd (U.S. 1) between W. Castillo Dr. north to Venetian Blvd.; and the San Sillito subdivision on Woodlawn Dr.

The replacement program is necessary because of increasing inefficiency of many of the older meters currently in use. The new meters will produce more accurate records of water use and introduce the ability to remotely read the meters creating a cost savings by eliminating the need to employ personnel dedicated to read the meters manually. The efficiency of the meters and the ability for more closely monitoring water use will increase water conservation by alerting the city of excessive water use that may indicate a leak unknown to the property owner.

During installation it will be necessary for a property’s water to be shut off. Generally and under normal circumstances, the shut off will last approximately 20 minutes. Utility customers in a particular area will be notified of the date of installation so as to make accommodations for the water shut off.

Installation of new meters throughout the city’s service area will take approximately six months.
