Concerts in the Plaza, one of St. Augustine’s favorite summer offerings, has received tremendous support this summer from residents and visitors alike. Beginning on Memorial Day and concluding on Labor Day, and every Thursday in between, the concerts have been drawing in excess of 500 hundred music lovers to the City’s historic Plaza de la Constitucion to enjoy a wide variety of musical entertainment.
Except for Labor Day, all the remaining weekly concerts are on Thursday evenings and run from 7:00pm until 9:00pm. The Labor Day concert is held in the afternoon starting at 1:00pm and will continue until 5:00pm.
All concerts are free of charge and those attending are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets for seating. Alcoholic beverages are prohibited in the Plaza.
The concerts are produced by the City of St. Augustine and are made possible through the support of Florida East Coast Industries, Inc., Auglink Telephone & Internet, CNB National Bank, the St. Augustine & St. Johns County Chamber of Commerce and the St. Johns County Tourist Development Council.
The Season Line-up
July’s schedule includes the jump blues and swing of the House Cats, classic rock and roll favorites delivered by Mid-Life Crisis, and delightful and fun Hawaiian jazz from Big Pineapple, making their initial appearance in the series. The Mike Hart Band closes out the month of July with the blues, jazz and funk that has made the band famous throughout Northeast Florida.
August begins with the alternative, bluegrass & Americana sounds of Captain Stringbean, powerful swing, sizzling jazz and Latin beats from Navy Band Southeast’s Jazz Ensemble, and the Triple Rock Blues Band offering favorite soul and jazz blues. The month concludes with The Driftwoods delivering traditional, contemporary and original Bluegrass music. The Thursday night concerts wrap-up on September 2 with a special concert by the St. Augustine High School Jazz Ambassadors playing everyone’s big band favorites
The season comes to a close on Labor Day, September 6, with an all afternoon line-up from the St. Augustine Jazz Society beginning at 1:00pm featuring A Touch of Brass with trombonist Dave Steinmeyer and the Clyde Crawford Group with vocalist Jan Crawford.
Because Florida’s summer rain showers are usually brief, even when heavy, Concerts in the Plaza has developed a policy over the years of not canceling performances in advance. As is often said: The only way you’ll know if a concert is cancelled is to be there. Performances will be postponed if the rain seems brief and cancelled only if the safety of the performers and the audience is deemed in jeopardy.
