The Driftwoods perform from the Plaza de la Constitucion’s Gazebo during the 2004 season of Concerts in the Plaza.
Concerts in the Plaza, one of St. Augustine’s favorite summer offerings, wrapped up its 2004 season a little early thanks to Hurricanes Bonnie and Frances. But, in spite of having three forced cancellations, over 7,500 people attended the season’s 15 concerts with a weekly attendance of over 500 people.
This was the 14th year for Concerts in the Plaza which were produced by the City of St. Augustine and are made possible through the support of Florida East Coast Industries, Inc., Auglink Telephone & Internet, CNB National Bank, the St. Augustine & St. Johns County Chamber of Commerce and the St. Johns County Tourist Development Council. Beginning on Memorial Day and concluding on Labor Day, and every Thursday in between, the concerts offer a wide variety of musical entertainment.
Held in the city’s historic Plaza de la Constitucion, the outdoor concerts have a mini-festival feel with those in attendance often arriving early with lounge chairs or blankets along with picnic dinners.
This year the concert line up included:
• Eddie Trester's Swing is the Thing with vocalist Debbie Rider
• The Roland Fleming Connection
• Bob & Joline Patterson's Friends of Mine Band
• Navy Band Southeast's Wind Ensemble
• Catch the Groove
• Ya'Gozo Latin Jazz Band
• First Coast Jazz Orchestra with vocalist Jan Crawford
• The All Star Orchestra
• The House Cats
• Mid-Life Crisis
• Big Pineapple
• Mike Hart Band
• Captain Stringbean
• Triple Rock Blues Band
• The Driftwoods
Those performances affected by the bad weather at the end of the summer were the Navy Band Southeast's Jazz Ensemble; the St. Augustine High School Jazz Ambassadors; and, two bands presented by the St. Augustine Jazz Society: A Touch of Brass with trombonist Dave Steinmeyer, and the Clyde Crawford Group with vocalist Jan Crawford.
Plans are already underway for the 15th season which starts on Monday, May 30, 2005.
