Although it was never meant to be a secret, it now seems that word has gotten out that the Willie Galimore Center is open. Judging by the level of regular activities and social events scheduled at the center, more and more organizations, churches, schools and individuals are discovering, or in many cases re-discovering, the Willie Galimore Center.
Located at the near southern end of Riberia St., the Willie Galimore Center is adjacent to Eddie Vickers Park, site of the Lincolnville Farmers Market on Sundays as well as CitySprout’s Lincolnville Community Garden. Built as a multi-purpose facility in 1984, the facility was operated for many years by the St. Johns County Parks and Recreation Department and, at that time, included a pool. After increasing costs closed the pool and then threatened the operation of the entire facility, the city took responsibility for the operation of the center
Currently there are nearly half a dozen mostly recreational activities scheduled in the center that generally fall during the week making the Galimore Center’s most available dates on Saturdays and Sundays.
The center features two function rooms. The large room will seat 143 people in a banquet style and can accommodate up to 280 people for a stand-up event, such as a reception. The smaller room will seat 30 people for dining and 80 people for a stand-up event. The center also features a kitchen, with ice machine, and restrooms sufficient to accommodate large functions.
Cost for the facility is $35 per hour and payment of a $100 refundable deposit. Additionally, for any event held there , the city will provide an on-site staff person to be available throughout the event.
