As you stroll along St. George Street, leave today’s world behind and discover life in another time. In fact, visit the year 1740 when St. Augustine was a small military outpost of the great Spanish Empire and it was not uncommon to visit the local tavern not only for refreshments but also the latest news in town and from the other colonies.
A visit today to the Taberna de Gallo, known locally simply as the taberna, or tavern, will take you back to 1740 as you sit back, relax, and enjoy a unique selection of draft and bottled beer or one of the Spanish wines or sangria, and Boylans or Jarritos sodas. It is truly the only tavern of its kind in St. Augustine.
The Taberna, 35 St. George St., is open Sunday through Thursday from noon-7:00pm, and Friday and Saturday from noon until 11:30pm.
Next door to The Taberna is The Colonial Spanish Quarter Gift Shop filled with a wide variety of items not found anywhere else among the many shops along St. George Street. Books on Colonial Spanish history, crafts, and pottery, handcrafted reproduction items made in the Colonial Spanish Quarter by trained craftsmen are also available as well as a variety of other art, pottery, glassware, jewelry and clothing are available.
The Colonial Spanish Quarter Gift Shop is located at 33 St. George St. and is open seven days a week from 9:00am until 5:30pm.
